There is a captivating story to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is not legal. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many borders.
The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slots and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the common table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel compound that contains many luxuries accompanying the gambling hall, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
